Canonical Definitions

The four dimensions every node is scored on, and the quantities computed from them

Kari McKern · Neural Nations · 20 October 2026 · aligned with the October 2026 thesis

Each of the eight nodes (Helm, Shield, Lore, Stewards, Craft, Hands, Archive, Flow) is scored each year on four dimensions. These are the authoritative definitions. Where an older page or tool describes a dimension differently, this page takes precedence.

The four dimensions

C Coherence

Internal alignment and coordination clarity within the node’s function.

K Capacity

Demonstrated ability to perform the node’s function.

S Stress

Rate of entropy production: the rate at which disorder is produced within the function.

Not the severity of an external challenge.

A Abstraction

The degree to which the node’s symbolic and conceptual activity is operationally integrated with its function (“coherent cognition”).

High A means sophisticated and grounded. Symbolic activity that has drifted from operational reality scores low.

Node Value

V = C + K + A/2 − S

Node Value is the only quantity defined directly from the four dimensions. System-level readings such as mean V are averages of it across nodes.

Derived quantities

These are computed from the four dimensions. They are not definitions of them.

All tools and papers using derived quantities such as σ and 𝒫(t)/𝒴(t) treat these as diagnostic composites computed from the canonical four dimensions above. They are not alternative definitions of those dimensions.
